White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) is the premier military test range in America, earning its title as “Birthplace of America’s Missile and Space Activity.” Comprised of 3,200 square miles, WSMR supports the Army, Navy and Air Force, as well as commercial and international users while conducting more than 3,000 tests annually.

  • Over 42,000 tests have been conducted at WSMR in the past 76 years. About 9 tests are conducted daily and more than 3,000 annually.
  • WSMR produces an estimated economic impact of $10.3 million daily, and $3.7 billion annually in Las Cruces, Doña Ana County and the surrounding borderland region. On average, military spending accounts for 30 percent of wages in Southern New Mexico and El Paso, Texas.
  • WSMR has approximately 6,000+ civilian employees, 350 service members from the Army (~ 230), Air Force (~110) and Navy (~20), 950 housing residents (374 housing units available) and 300 elementary and middle school students.

Bataan Memorial Death March (BMDM) is WSMR Family and MWR's most prestigious event which is held annually in the month of March.

Army ROTC at New Mexico State University began hosting the BMDM in 1989 to commemorate World War II POW's that were marched for days (approximately 65 miles) through the scorching jungles of the Philippines. The BMDM was moved to WSMR in 1992 and since its inception, the BMDM participation has grown significantly. Marchers travel internationally to participate on the challenging 14.2-mile or 26.2-mile course. Learn more.
